An Open Letter to the G8 Summit
Subject: The truth about Somaliland

By Mohamed Ali Mirreh , September 18, 2005

Dear Heads of State :

I am a Somali citizen hailing from what some call “ Somaliland ”.   I am writing this letter to you in response to what you may receive from some who advocate for separate homeland, based purely on one clan. The so-called “Somaliland” concept is the invention of some disgruntled clan members who, acting upon chauvinism and tribal hatred decided to exploit the current situation of Somalia. As nothing is further from the truth “ Somaliland” is a region inhabited by many clans and unfortunately, it is some members of one clan who are opting for secession.

Your Excellencies:

Although I am aware of the fact you are currently discussing very important issues like aid for Africa, debt relief, fair trade as well as climate change, yet and with all my apology to you for taking few of your valuable minutes, I am obliged to write to you when I have discovered that some people from “ Somaliland” are writing to your excellencies in an attempt to obtain an international recognition from the G8 summit.

Your Excellencies:

As many Somalis do, I sincerely hope that the outcome of your deliberations in relation to Somalia will be consistent with the wish of all Somalis who are not willing the dismemberment of their country along clan and sub clan lineage.

Your Excellencies:

A recognition to “ Somaliland” would be like opening a Pandora box and each clan of this homogeneous Somali nation would come up with the same demands and as a result a re-ignition of clan wars would follow causing more destruction, destitute and the very poverty in Africa, which is today in your agenda.

Sincerely,

Eng. Mohamed Ali Mirreh
